🇪🇺 What’s happening in Europe?

Nothing, the UK-based startup behind the AI-first Smartphone and other wearables, raised a $200m Series C funding round at a $1.3b valuation. Tiger Global led the round, with significant support from GV, Highland Europe, EQT and others. The newly crowned unicorn also announced another ‘community-round’ would follow soon to further fuel their David vs Goliath journey against Apple. Is this a domain in which we want to challenge the US tech giants and foster European sovereignty? We shall see.

Meanwhile, US based HR Tech firm Workday acquired AI agent builder Sana for $1.1b and Check Point took over Lakera from Zurich for $300m. While this is a great success for the respective ecosystems and the acquirees themselves (as well as investment bankers), the question remains whether Europe needs more exits or perhaps more companies aiming to be this generation’s SAP.

On the other hand, Canadian AI company Cohere is set to open up a new office in Paris - and “happy to pay extremely high salaries”. Let’s hope Mistral & co can match that. Apparently they are also already looking at Germany next.
